Background and release [edit]
"All Effectually the Earth was tiptop of well-nigh. Over the years, a lot of people take told me the song helped them through a difficult period. That'due south beautiful, to know you've helped someone in that manner. The song literally took u.s.a. around the world, iv times. I suppose you accept to exist careful what you lot sing, considering you might have to do it."
—Lisa Stansfield talking nigh the song.[two]
Stansfield co-wrote the lyrics of "All Around the World" with her former bandmates Ian Devaney and Andy Morris from Blue Zone. In a 2019 interview, Stansfield recalled the process when the song was made:
I came into the studio, and Ian was messing around at the pianoforte. He had a melody, and I just started singing: "Been around the globe and I, I, I…" Everyone laughed just Ian said, "Wait, it'south really expert, that." It simply came into my head – it was nonsense, but had a really skilful experience to it. "I, I, I" became the principal hook. Nosotros'd no idea how massive information technology would become.
The song came down quickly and on low upkeep. The song function was made in merely two takes and real strings were put on afterwards. The vocal is largely influenced by American singer-songwriter Barry White. Every bit a tribute to him, they made a spoken intro on "All Around the World" like the one on the album version of White'southward "Let the Music Play", simply shorter.[2]
The song was released as the 2nd European single on 16 October 1989. Information technology was remixed by Yvonne Turner, Eddie Gordon, Paul Witts and Steve Anderson. In N America, "All Around the World" was released every bit the first single on 15 January 1990 and included remixes created by The 45 King and Richard Sweret. In Nippon, the single was released on 7 February 1990. Stansfield went on to become the kickoff white British woman to reach number-one on the Billboard R&B nautical chart, the American black music nautical chart. A music video was made to accompany the vocal, directed by Philip Richardson.
Critical reception [edit]
The song received favorable reviews from many music critics. Matthew Hocter from Albumism called it "sultry and heartbreakingly beautiful".[three] AllMusic editor Alex Henderson described information technology as a "melancholy, Barry White-influenced single" and noted further that "it was obvious that not since Teena Marie had a white female vocalist performed R&B so convincingly."[4] Bill Coleman from Billboard said it "sports that all-likewise-familiar Soul Ii Soul-ish feel simply it's the lyric and Stansfield'south emotive vocal which take it to the next level."[5] Ernest Hardy from Cashbox stated that "it's her earthy vocals swarthed in whirling strings and placed against a soft beat that sets toes borer, shoulders swaying and heads bopping." He added that "there'due south no denying that Stansfield has released one of 1990s best singles. What a way to start the year."[six] A reviewer from The Dallas Forenoon News called it "infectious".[7] Greg Sandow from Entertainment Weekly commented that Stansfield "might be hurtling right to the top of the charts. Can we listen to her soberly? "We drive each other crazy", she sings, in a voice similar a suffocated flame. "No two people ever felt this fashion", she wants her lucky lover to know."[eight] Swedish paper Expressen wrote that Stansfield "sings like an older black woman. An old-fashioned kind of song, very practiced."[9] Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger said that "All Effectually the World" "is a song well-nigh guilt and loss, it's no surprise she doesn't sound quite and then blithesome."[10] Reading Eagle described it equally a "hauntingly seductive" runway that "revolves around a classic hook."[11] Amy Linden for Rolling Stone noted that Stansfield "accomplishes what she has to with disarming ease. The way she reaches for the high notes ("What Did I Do to You?") and the way her voice slinks effectually the line "and so-oo sad" in "All Around the Globe" evidence that this is someone who knows her roots – fifty-fifty if they aren't actually hers."[12] John Nichols from Toledo Bract said it is "dazzling" and added that Stansfield's voice "is everywhere it is should be – whispering, soaring, going deep so going loud. There is no doubt she owns a musical gift."[13] USA Today commented that "All Around the Earth" "has knocked the socks off listeners ... well, all effectually the world."[xiv]
